Machamp
Machamp OU Pokemon 68

Type: Fighting

Abilities
---------
Guts: Attack is increased 50% when statused.

No Guard: All attacks used by and used on this Pokémon will never miss.

Statistics Min- Min Max Max+
HP 70 - 321 384 -
ATK 130 266 296 359 394
DEF 80 176 196 259 284
SpA 65 149 166 229 251
SpD 85 185 206 269 295
SPE 55 131 146 209 229
Set #1: Rest Talk
Held Item: Leftovers
Ability: No Guard
Nature Adamant
EV's: 252 HP / 252 ATK / 4 SPE
Moves
-DynamicPunch
-Payback / Stone Edge / Ice Punch
-Rest
-Sleep Talk

This set today is the most standard and usuable set. Due to the fact that Machamp's overpowered STAB has low PP and so Machamp can absorb status when switching in. Dynamic Punch is obviously the best choice for STAB move as it has massive power and thanks to "No Guard" it will not miss, allowing you to force confusion on any Pokemon who takes the hit. The next slot consists of Payback, Stone Edge, and Ice Punch. Payback allows you to deal with ghost and also provides you with the best coverage. Stone Edge lets you deal with bulky fliers, such as "Zapdos" and "Gyarados". Ice Punch, should OHKO any "Salamence" and "Gliscor", without a Yache Berry. Rest allows Machamp to take hits and maintain itself putting itself to sleep, allowing you to use Sleep Talk that doesn't delete PP of other moves. The 252 HP ev's ensure more survivability as for the 4 speed ev's allow you to outrun 0 Spe ev Blissey.

Set #2 Anti Lead
Held Item: Lum Berry
Ability: No Guard
Nature Adamant
IV: 19 SPE
EV's: 252 HP / 160 ATK / 96 SpD
Moves
-Substitute
-Encore
-Dynamic Punnch
-Stone Edge / Payback

This set allows you shut down common leads that would normally get in Machamp's way. Which include; Azelf, Roserade, Gengar, Bronzong, etc. Due to the fact that Machamp packs both, "Substitute" and "Encore" in its movepool. How this set functions is determined by the opponent's lead Pokemon. Substitute is normally the most ideal against slower leads it could also be used to scout the moves of faster Pokemon, as for Encore is more ideal when you know your opponent is going to use a non attacking move. If you know the opponents lead is packing super effective moves such as Azelf it is best to use encore, as you may safely switch in to something that resists it. Status problems are normally not a issue (thanks to lum berry), So your guaranteed you may land a Dyanmic Punch or Stone Edge / Payback. When picking the move for the last slot you want to have the most coverage as possible, Stone Edge takes out the likes of; Salamence, Zapdos, and Gyarados. Payback lets you OHKO, Azelf and Gengar,as well as 2HKOing Rotom Appliance Formes. 96 Special Def evs, will gurantee you can take a hit from a non boosted Modest Azelf's STAB Psychic and the 19 Speed IV reduces the power of Bronzong's Gyro Ball to 47 which is too weak to break a substitute in 1 hit.

Set #3 Bulk Up
Held Item: Leftovers
Ability: No Guard
Nature: Adamant
EV's: 252 HP / 128 ATK / 128 SPE
Moves
-Bulk Up
-DynamicPunch
-Stone Edge / Ice Punch
-Payback / Thunderpunch

With Bulk Up, Machamp can wreck shit for teams that lack a faster special sweeper(s), such as Azelf, Jirachi, and Togekiss. The combination of DynamicPunch and Bulk Up, work great with each other, due to the fact that the confusion left after DynamicPunch may prevent them from attacking or forcing them to switch, allowing you to safely Bulk Up. Like usual, the moves you pick this time are a matter of preference, the best combinations being; Thunderpunch and Ice Punch or Stone Edge and Payback. The only and major flaw to this set is the fact that many faster sweepers run around the OU tier making this set possibly easy to revenge kill. The 128 speed evs allows Machamp to outrun mininum speed Skarmory.

Set #4 Choice Band

Held Item: Choice Band
Nature: Adamant
EV's: 248 HP / 88 ATK / 172 SPE
Moves
-Close Combat
-Payback
-Ice Punch
-Thunderpunch

When fitted with a choice band, Machamp reaches a monstorous 591 Atk stat. (Assuming that you have a 31 IV). With Close Combat and the awesome coverage this set provides, means very little Pokemon can switch in and take a hit. With 120 Base ATK power, STAB, and Choice Band, Close Combat will nail and easily 2HKO any Pokemon in the metagame that does not resist it or immunity to fighting. Payback is included in the slot to deal with bulky Ghost and Psychic type Pokemon, such as Cresselia and Rotom Formes. Ice Punch will nail and OHKO any Salamence and Gliscor, without it they will wall you completely. Thunderpunch OHKO's Gyarados even after Machamp is itimidated, it will have less power than Close Combat on water types that have a 2x weakness to Electric. This set is especially fearsome when it asorbs status even to Pokemon that resists some moves that this set consists of.

Set #5 Guts Activation (~Jackfrost)
Held Item: Flame Orb
Ability: Guts
Nature: Adamant
EVS: 252 ATK / 8 DEF / 248 SPE
Moves
-Substitute / Protect
-Close Combat
-Payback / Stone Edge
-Facade

Machamp running on guts is like a Choice Banded Machamp, being able to use different moves, instead of being stuck on one. For the 1st slot, we obviously need something that can scout moves and can safely activate the Flame Orb. Substitute is prior option due to the fact that it allows Machamp to take a hit and scout the moves of slower Pokemon (Mainly best when you predict a switch), but will increase the damage you take every turn from burn making Machamp die faster. Protect is the better choice when going against faster Pokemon and will also not let Machamp die as fast, as substitute would. Just like the Choice Band Set, Close Combat, will easily 2HKO any Pokemon that doesn't resist or has fighting immunity, when factoring in Guts. The next slot consists of Payback and Stone Edge. Payback will hit a plethora of bulky ghosts and psychics, as for Stone Edge will hit the likes of Zapdos, Gyarados, Salamence. Facade will hit neutral on about everything, thanks to Machamp's coverage anything that resists Facade can be hit. The 248 SPE evs allow Machamp to outrun mininum speed Suicune with 4 speed evs.

Set #6 Choice Scarf

Held Item: Choice Scarf
Ability: Guts
Nature: Jolly
EV's: 12 HP / 252 Atk / 244 Spe
Moves
-Close Combat
-Payback
-Ice Punch
-Thunderpunch

One of the worst things about Machamp is his terrible speed, which is too slow to sweep opposing Pokemon sometimes. With the given evs and nature Machamp now reaches 340 Speed when fitted with a choice scarf, which will outrun all 105 base speed Pokemon with 252 speed evs as well as outspeeding Gyarados and Tyranitar after one Dragon Dance. Just like the Choice Band set, this set gives Machamp the most coverage it can possible. When switching in to status be sure to only switch into Burn and Posoin, as paralyze will kill this set.

Set #7 OMG Choice Specs? (~Jude/Sumeet)
Held Item: Choice Specs
Ability: No Guard
Nature: Modest
252 Hp / 252 Special Attack / 4 Speed
Moves
-Focus Blast
-Fire Blast
-Vacuum Wave
-Hp [Ice]

Machamp is generally seen as a massive Physical threat and most people tend to run to their Physical walls to Machamp. With Specs Machamp, he can take out all common switch ins to Physical moves and let something like say, Physical Infernape sweep unopposed. With these ev's, Machamp's Special Attack hits 376 and with a 180 BP Move plus STAB, he's really going to be knocking down things like Forretress, Swampert and Celebi with powerful Super Effective attacks. Focus Blast is your main attack here, dealing massive damage to those that don't resist it. Fire Blast hits Scizor and Forretress for the OHKO as well as many other Steels. Vacuum Wave is priority and can pick up kills in a revenge-like fashion. Hp [Ice] hits those Dragons that would otherwise resist this entire set. Max Hp and Max Special Attack for bulk and power. Now honestly, a 180 BP+STAB move that never misses?

Other Options

Fire Punch is your best choice against Heracross, it will also OHKO Scizor. Fire Blast can be used to hit Skarmory and Forretress, it will not however 2HKO Skarmory or OHKO Forretress, unless you invest some Special ATK evs, it will also never miss thanks to No Guard. Bullet Punch is Machamp's best prioirty move and is good when finishing off faster opponent, but it really lacks power.

Opinion

The main reason why anyone would use Machamp over other fighting types, is because they want to take advantage of its ability, "No Guard" and STAB DynamicPunch which will never miss with that ability. When it comes to sweeping the likes of Lucario and Heracross easily outclass Machamp, due to its low speed, and them being much faster. The main advantage that Machamp has over other fightings is that it has superior defenses, unlike the ones run in OU. It can easily take on Tyranitar making it a excellent counter. It also consists of a wide movepool that comes in handy making it hard to determine what kind of Machamp will be running what moves.

Counters / Revenge

Machamp is one of the hardest Pokemon to counter in today's metagame, because nothing likes to take a STAB DynamicPunch, which forces confusion. The best switchins against Machamp are obvious going to be bulky ghosts. Spiritomb is the best choice, due to the fact as its immune to DynamicPunch and is not weak to Payback. Bulky Ghosts will drain Machamps PP normally before Machamp has the chance to kill them making them the most apporpiate and excellent true counter of todays metagame. Rotom formes can also switch into most moves that Machamp consists of and setup Reflect, which would even wall Payback, or Light Screen.

Slowbro can easily come in as it resists DynamicPunch and cannot be confused, thanks to Own Tempo. Machamp can't even 2HKO Slowbro when fitted with a Choice Band, and Slowbro will have no problem slacking it off. Bulky Psychics such as Celebi and Cresselia can setup Reflect even walling Machamp's Payback, however being confused can be annoying. They also sometimes pack STAB Psychic. Gliscor will wall any set that does not pack Ice Punch. Gyarados is a good switch-in if Machamp doesn't have Thunderpunch or Stone Edge.

So many Pokemon in the OU enviroment easily Outrun Machamp making him easily to revenge kill. This is especially bad on the Bulk Up set, as Special Sweepers, normally force Machamp to switch-out making him lose his perfect setup.

PostSubject: My Machamp sets   Machamp OU Pokemon EmptySat Jul 25, 2009 2:30 pm

I'll add my own sets to every Pokemon you sticky btw ._.

Set #7

Vacuum Wave is priority and can pick up kills in a revenge-like fashion. Hp [Ice] hits those Dragons that would otherwise resist this entire set. Max Hp and Max Special Attack for bulk and power. Now honestly, a 180 BP+STAB move that never misses?

Now for a suggestion. In the Anti-lead set, make it an option to run Substitute and three attacks. It works very well as a lead or in mid game.

that specs set is amazing no one will every predict it.

The most effective specs set on a physical attacker I have seen is on garchomp, now he's gone, this set looks lite it will take it's place, no guarf plus focus blast is a great idea aswell, and blissey will neaver switch into machamp just incase it has dynamic punch.

However I think dynamic punch should be an idea over vacume wave, his special attack is not great, so only a very weak sweeper will be taken out, and allows pokemon like salamnce to easily set up and just incase a special wall switches in like snorlax, umbreon or blissey, dynamic punch will do alot of damadge even with an attack cutting nature (you may not want to cut his defences) and the confusion is nothing to be turned down.

I love Machamp and i like all the sets you got here but that Guts Flame Orb one confuses me. You say protect is the better move for scouting but you lose like either way as you would with Substitute which makes me question if you should put a different move there instead of them. I suggest Sleep talk because once they see the Flame Orb trigger they may want to put you to sleep since you dont have leftovers and the burn damage would kill you regardless. Just a thought.
